Golf licensing in 2002 mostly meant a photorealistic Pebble Beach and a swing meter tuned for people who watched the majors. So a PS2 golf game fronted by Mickey, Donald, Goofy and Pete was an odd proposition, and the odd part is that underneath the ears it plays fairly straight. The swing is the familiar power-and-accuracy meter, the lies and wind readouts behave as you'd expect, and the physics doesn't cheat much on your behalf. What's cartoonish is everything around the ball.
The roster works the way character rosters always work in this kind of sports spin-off: a handful of Disney regulars split between raw distance and control, so Pete swings for the horizon while the smaller characters trade yardage for a tighter meter. It's a shallow system, but it does give the mode structure some point, because a course that punishes long hitters actually punishes them. Anyone who has played a licensed golf game knows how rarely those stat lines mean anything at all.
The courses are the real argument for the game. Rather than the usual coastal links, holes are dressed with Disney set pieces, water and hazards placed for visual comedy as much as difficulty, and there's a persistent sense that the layout designers were storyboarding rather than surveying. That cuts both ways. Some holes read clearly and reward a sensible line; others hide the obvious shot behind scenery and turn a par into guesswork on a first attempt.
It looks its budget. Flat lighting, plain crowd-free fairways, and animation loops that repeat well before a full eighteen is done. Four players passing a controller around is where it holds up best, because the arcade edges smooth over the shortfalls and nobody is studying the green.
As a children's golf game it's competent and unexpectedly honest about the sport, which is more than most character tie-ins of the era managed. Nobody was going to keep it in the disc tray after the novelty of watching Goofy shank one wore off.
