The needs bar does not care that you have been shipwrecked. That is the joke buried inside Castaway, and it turns out to be a decent design engine: your Sim is stranded on an uncharted island chain with no plumbing, no fridge and no neighbours, yet hunger, hygiene, energy and the rest keep draining on the same clock they used in suburbia. Everything you build exists to answer one of those meters. A hollowed log becomes a bathtub. A pile of palm fronds becomes a bed.
EA's console team rebuilt the series loop around scavenging. Bamboo, vines, stone, fibre and fruit are scattered across beaches, jungles and caves, and the crafting bench turns them into tools, furniture and shelter parts that snap into the familiar build mode. Progress is gated by discovery rather than money, so instead of a job track you get a running list of goals: find the rest of the crew, reach the next island, work out what happened to the people who left carvings behind. The monkeys are the strangest and best idea here. Befriend one, teach it a task, and it will haul resources or perform chores while you handle something else, which is the closest the series has come to putting a servant NPC under player control.
The survival framing is soft. You will not starve if you leave the game running, and the danger never sharpens beyond the occasional fatigue or a need in the red. What it does instead is give the Sims formula a reason to exist that is not a mortgage, and for a lot of players in 2007 that was the appeal. Explore, drag materials home, watch a camp turn into a village.
The PS2 build shows its limits. Loading between island areas is frequent, the camera fights you in dense jungle, and pathfinding through cluttered camps produces the usual Sims comedy of a character walking the long way around a fire pit. Texture work is flat next to the Wii and PC versions. None of it is fatal, because the pleasure is cumulative rather than moment to moment.
What holds up is the arc. You arrive with nothing, you spend hours picking up sticks, and at some point you look at a functioning settlement with a kitchen, a shower and a chimp carrying firewood and realise you assembled it one need at a time. Castaway is a domestic game wearing an adventure's clothes, and it is honest about that. The island never stops being a house to keep tidy.
