Clip a kerb wrong at speed in a heavy touring car and the thing goes over. Not a scripted stumble, not a bounce back onto four wheels, but a genuine roll that leaves you on your roof with the engine cutting out and the field streaming past. Codemasters made rollovers a headline feature in 2004 and then built a career mode that punished them properly, because a wrecked shell meant a retirement and a retirement meant points you were not getting back.
What surrounded that was breadth on a scale nobody else was attempting on the console. The series had already staked its claim on British touring cars, and the sequel widened out into GT machinery, open-wheel single-seaters, V8 Supercars, ovals and a stack of classic tin-tops, spread across a track list that ran from Donington and Bathurst to short American circuits. The point was not the number. The point was that each class actually needed relearning: a Formula Ford asks for precision and gets terrified by contact, a V8 wants you to lean on it and use the brakes late, and the game does not smooth the gap between them for your convenience.
The career threads all of that together with a light progression structure rather than the full-blown story mode of its predecessor, which was probably the right call. Race Driver's first outing tried to sell you a rivalry and some voice-acted melodrama; this one mostly trusts the racing, and the racing is where the money went. The AI holds racing lines, defends without cheating, and makes mistakes of its own, so a mid-pack scrap over sixth place stays interesting for ten laps.
It has aged in the ways sixth-generation racers do. The frame rate sags with a full grid, the visuals are functional rather than handsome, and the handling model sits in an awkward middle ground that will feel loose to anyone coming from a modern sim and stiff to anyone expecting arcade forgiveness. Learn its weight and its grip limits, though, and it repays patience better than most of its contemporaries.
More than anything, it captured the working professional's calendar: unglamorous cars, damp circuits, and a championship decided by whoever kept their bodywork intact longest.
