Digging up a cursed treasure chest is the sort of mistake only SpongeBob would make, and the consequence here is less a villain than an errand list. The Flying Dutchman gets loose, and from that point almost everything the game asks of you comes filtered through a resident of Bikini Bottom who needs something fetched. Patrick wants a thing. Mr. Krabs wants a thing. Sandy has a thing she'll trade for a different thing. The structure is honest about itself, which is more than a lot of 2002 licensed platformers managed.
Big Sky Interactive built it as a hub adventure rather than a corridor of levels, and that decision is the most interesting thing about it. Jellyfish Fields, Goo Lagoon, Downtown and the Krusty Krab connect into a small world you re-enter repeatedly as new abilities open old corners, and SpongeBob returns to his pineapple to sleep between stretches of work. The pacing that produces is slow and oddly domestic — a lot of walking back to people who already asked you for something. Younger players in 2002 seemed to like the familiarity; anyone expecting momentum did not get it.
The moving-around part is where the age shows. SpongeBob's jump has a floaty, imprecise arc, the camera fights you in tight spaces, and the combat amounts to bubble attacks and karate swipes that connect when they feel like it. Platforming sections built on narrow ledges over hazards are the worst of it, because the controls were never accurate enough to earn that kind of demand.
What it does have is texture. The show's voice cast turns up, the writing catches the cartoon's rhythm more often than not, and the underwater art direction reads clearly on a CRT. A year later Heavy Iron's Battle for Bikini Bottom took the same setting and gave it real platforming, which retroactively turned this into a first draft.
Still worth a look as the moment the license found its shape — awkward, patient, and unmistakably fond of its own cast.
