Treasure Planet came out in 2002 alongside a Disney film that underperformed badly in theaters, and the game has always lived in that shadow. It was developed by Sony Computer Entertainment's Cambridge studio and published by SCEE and SCEA. It is a licensed tie-in in the plainest sense, following the film's outline of Jim Hawkins, the cyborg cook Long John Silver, and a Treasure Island story relocated to a galaxy of sailing ships.
The best idea here is the solar surfer. Jim's board gives the game its sense of speed and its main change of pace, with stretches where you skim along at height rather than walk. Between those sections you are on foot, fighting with a sword and moving through ships and alien settings, picking your way across platforms and ledges. Nothing in the structure is unusual for a movie game of the period, and that is both its limit and its safe floor.
The combat is where the age shows. Swordplay is simple, enemy variety is thin, and the camera does not always cooperate when a fight gets crowded. Platforming sections are forgiving, which suits the younger audience the game clearly had in mind, though a seasoned player will find little to resist. Difficulty stays gentle for most of the run, and the pacing leans on repetition more than on new ideas.
What holds up is the look. The cel-shaded and painterly design of the film, with its mix of old galleons and cosmic backdrops, translates reasonably well to the hardware, and the tone stays faithful to the movie's. It reads as a careful adaptation rather than a rushed cash-in, which was not guaranteed in 2002.
It will not change anyone's opinion of licensed games. But as a short, friendly adventure for a younger player, or as a curiosity for fans of a film that deserved a bigger audience, it does its modest job and stays out of its own way.
