Haunting Ground

About Haunting Ground

The dog is the system. Hewie, a white shepherd Fiona Belli finds chained in the grounds of Belli Castle, obeys according to how you have treated him: praise him after a good attack, scold him when he ignores a command, and over hours he becomes a reliable partner who will hold a stalker at bay while you run. Neglect him and he hangs back, whines, does nothing useful at the worst possible moment. Very few games of the era asked you to maintain a relationship with an AI companion as a survival resource rather than a cutscene friend.

Capcom released this in 2005 as the final descendant of the Clock Tower line, and it keeps that series' central rule: you cannot win a fight. Fiona has a kick and a shove and that is all. What she has instead is a panic meter. Being chased pushes her toward hysteria, and hysteria takes the controls away from you — she stumbles, mistimes doorways, drops what she is carrying, and the screen blurs and pulses until the input you gave stops meaning what you intended. Hiding in a wardrobe or under a table means holding still while a pursuer sweeps the room, and the game tracks scent and sound, so a hiding place you used twice is no longer a hiding place.

Each stalker demands a different read of the castle. Debilitas is a lumbering groundskeeper who plays with what he catches; Daniella is a maid who moves at walking pace and never stops coming, and her pursuit turns the same corridors you had memorised into something you have to relearn. The alchemy crafting is thin and the item management is fussier than it needs to be, but the chase design is genuinely first-rate, and it holds up better than most survival horror of its generation precisely because it never falls back on ammunition economy.

What has aged poorly is the camera's attitude toward Fiona, the outfits, the leering that sits uncomfortably beside a story about a woman being hunted for her body. It is not incidental, and it is worth naming. But the terror underneath is real, and the moment Hewie comes back to you bloodied and still standing is one the PS2 library has nothing else quite like.
